Hilton Plans More Luxury Rollouts

STR reported China hotel RevPAR for the week ended December 3. RevPAR was down -2.6% on a year-over-year basis while down -40.2% against the same week in 2019. More reports are coming out about China’s decision to roll back Covid-Zero rules . The latest STR report, commissioned by Arabian Travel Market, conducted at the end of September 2022, suggests the GCC region now has over 170,000 hotel rooms under active development.

Morgan Stanley Sees Airbnb’s Property Supply Slowing

Morgan Stanley cut their rating on Airbnb to Underweight from Equal Weight, slashing its target price to $80 from $100. Marriott International announced plans to introduce more than 35 luxury hotels in 2023 to its portfolio of luxury brands. STR reported US lodging data for the week ended 12/3. Hotel RevPAR was up 11.7% year over year while up 1.2% versus 2019.

ClubMed Celebrates Its Birthday With Expansion

Club Med is celebrating its seventy-second birthday as it expands to even more places around the globe. Deutsche Bank gave its first broad-based downward revision to hotel REIT estimates since the travel recovery began in spring 2021. The growing demand for luxury branded residences is stronger than ever, especially in Florida.

Multiple Lodging Stocks Hit New Lows

The 10-year treasury yield was up .20 today to 3.71%. Do we need to tell you what happened to stocks? The DJIA was down 107, Nasdaq was down 153, the S&P 500 was down 32. Truist reported on meetings they held with the management of Wyndham Hotels . Demand trends remain favorable and while management is closely monitoring bookings, length of stay, cancellation rates and such, they see no immediate cause for concern. As recent demand for hotel rooms breaks records and prices skyrocket, hotel investors are taking notice as 80% of them plan on buying throughout the remainder of 2022 and into 2023 .

Marriott Plans Luxury Expansion Across APAC

Marriott International  announced it expects to open  14 additional luxury properties   in Asia Pacific by the end of 2023 . Marriott currently operates 156 luxury properties in the region. Construction of the long-awaited resort at  Kalgoorlie Golf Course  in the city of  Kalgoorlie-Boulder  in  Australia  has finally begun. PT Platnet Properindo Jaya Tbk will initiate the operation of Citi Hub Hotel, Kelapa Gading in Indonesia in 2023.

Upbeat Expectations for 2023

The DJIA  rose 30 points while Nasdaq was up 86, the S&P 500 rose 13 points and the 10-year treasury yield was down .01 to 3.41%. Truist reported on a call they held with the CEO of hotelAVE . The takeaways included that they saw leisure demand start to slow in May while group and corporate recovery is now benefiting from urban and convention hotels. JP Morgan reported on meetings held with Wyndham Hotels’ CEO and SVP, IR. JPM said the meetings were generally upbeat, reflective of strong demand and pricing trends as well as steady new development and conversion signings.

New Hotel Fees Are on the Way

The  DJIA  ended Friday with a gain of 377 points while  Nasdaq  was up 250, the  S&P 500  rose 61 points and the  10-year treasury yield  was up .03 to 3.32%. Lodging stocks were modestly higher. USA Today published a story, actually a prediction that new hotel fees may be popping up . The St. Joe Company and InterMountain Management, LLC announced the commencement of construction on a new hotel in Panama City Beach, FL .

Lodging Stocks End the Week on a Down Note

The Baird/STR Hotel Stock Index was up 14.3% in July. Year to date the first seven months of 2022, the stock index is still down by -10.4%. According to Bloomberg, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is exploring options, including a possible sale of the Miami Beach Edition hotel .
