Marriott's Executive Reshuffling

Lodging stocks were mostly lower on Friday. PLYA bucked the trend with an 8% gain on stronger-than-expected earnings. SOND was down another -8%, VCSA fell -7% and SLNA traded down to yet another new all-time low. Besides Playa Hotels’ strong results, Ryman Hospitality Properties took part in the winding down of earnings season with results that were better than their December update. HRI Hospitality announced the topping out of its new hotel project, Tempo by Hilton Nashville Downtown .

Ace Hotels Bought for $85 Million

The DJIA  fell 392 points but Nasdaq was up 16, the S&P 500 rose 8 points and the 10-year treasury yield was up .02 to 3.54%. Lodging stocks were modestly higher with no major movers. Investment firm Sortis agreed to acquire Ace Group International for $85 million . The all-cash deal will give Sortis the boutique Ace Hotels brand and its hotel management company. International visitors spent more than $15.9 billion on travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the United States , an increase of nearly 57% compared to November 2021

Year-End Hotel News Roundup

EF Hutton initiated coverage on Selina Hospitality with a Buy rating and $6.50 price target. STR reported US lodging data for the week ended 12/24. RevPAR was down -0.2% year over year while down -7.6% versus the same week in 2019. Bluegreen Vacation Holdings said they had a total of 3,040,882 shares of Class A Common Stock tendered in their cash tender offer to purchase up to 4.5 million common shares at $25 per share.

U.S. Rates Are Higher But Not Back to 2019

Airbnb saw its rating cut at Baird to Neutral from Outperform. Baird lowered their price target to $100 from $120. The U.S hotel industry reported higher performance from the month prior but weakened comparisons with 2019 , according to October 2022 data from STR . Through Q3 2022 , the U.S. hotel industry exceeded 2019 RevPAR levels by 6.4%, based on data from STR.

Marriott and Hilton Increase Share Buyback Authorizations

Lodging stocks were higher again with MCG up 11%, HT up 8%, ABNB up 7%, SLNA up 6% and SVC up another 5%. Both Marriott International and Hilton announced an increase in their share buyback authorizations. Hilton announced its board of directors authorized the repurchase of an additional $2.5 billion of common stock under its existing stock repurchase program.

Strong Recovery Indicators for Remainder of 2022

The  DJIA  dropped 1.54%,  Nasdaq  fell 2.84%, the  S&P 500  declined 2.11% and the  10-year treasury yield  rose slightly, to 3.76%. After an outstanding summer of travel,  Amadeus’  Agency360 and Demand360 data sources are showing  strong recovery indicators for the remainder of 2022  and evidence of growing traveler confidence as the sector looks towards 2023. Service Properties Trust  announced it entered into a purchase and sale agreement to sell  16 Marriott branded hotels  totaling 2,155 keys for $137.3 million.

Peachtree Hospitality Adding 1,500 Rooms to Portfolio

The  DJIA fell another 325 points on Monday, Nasdaq was up 0.1%, the S&P 500 fell 0.6% and the 10-year treasury yield rose to 3.88%. Peachtree Hospitality Development is on track to deliver a record year of development achievements. In 2022, PHD opened three select-service hotels, with another hotel slated to open later this year. Embassy Suites by Hilton Washington D.C. Convention Center announced the completion of its $30 million renovation that includes a complete transformation to the hotel featuring a fresh, modern redesign.

RevPAR Tracker Sees No Recession-Driven Pullbacks

The DJIA was up 436 points, Nasdaq was up 247, the S&P 500 was up 72 points and the 10-year treasury yield was down .08 to 3.27%. Truist Securities published their RevPAR tracker, saying based on their analysis, they have yet to observe any “recession-driven” pullbacks and see the greatest degree of booking and pricing momentum coming from the corporate group segment. Hotels in the top 25 markets across the U.S. were the hardest hit by the pandemic-induced demand downturn but have come back with a vengeance.

Global Travel Prices to Increase Through 2023

The DJIA surged 515 points, Nasdaq was up 361, the S&P 500 was up 88 and suddenly the 10 year treasury yield is calm and the indexes are nuts again. STR said US Lodging RevPAR was up 12.2% year over year for the week ended 8/6. Global travel prices are predicted to continue to increase in the remaining months of 2022 and throughout 2023, according to the 2023 Global Business Travel Forecast.

Graduate Hotels Launches a Short-Term Rental Brand

The vast majority of lodging company earnings, both REIT and C-Corp , have been very positive, with the REITs being the biggest surprise. Crescent Hotels & Resorts has added The Viv, Anaheim, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel , to its Latitudes: Lifestyle by Crescent collection. Black Creek Mexico announced that Grupo Alojica completed the Westin Resort & Spa acquisition, in Puerto Vallarta , from affiliates of Marriott Vacations Worldwide .
